There's nothing I enjoy more is seeing people discover the delights of cross stitch, or more often than not it's really 'rediscover' as I regularly hear 'oh i used to do that as a kid and love it!' or 'oh i remember doing that at school' but then often they don't do more as commercially available kits rarely catered for kids. I'm not sure if they still do cross stitch in school, but luckily we now have some brilliant makers of children's cross stitch kits so whatever the level, your littlest stitcher can get started and discover the fun of cross stitch for themselves.

I love sharing other creators in the cross stitch community. In the past I have shared with you five of my favourite indie cross stitch designers, and five of my favourite indie cross stitch accessory makers but today I wanted to share with you a few of the best children's cross stitch kits out there. The list includes everything from kits for the youngest new stitchers to those who are a little older and looking to improve their skills, and ends with the perfect gift for the young cross stitch enthusiast! So let's dive right in

Rex London

Rex London Woodland Stitching Set with animal shapes and colorful strings on a wooden table. Box and "Toy Awards Gold 2023" badge visible.

Rex London has a super cute array of cardboard stitching sets within their Children's craft section, perfect for the youngest stitcher (recommended from 3 years) with bright cardboard animals, easy to see holes and vibrant laces to thread through by hand, these kits will make teaching the basics of stitching a doddle. I love this one so much that I may or may not have already bought one for when little miss TSK (who I realise has only just turned 1) is ready to give it a go.

Anne-Clare, the founder of Cotton Twist does an amazing job at creating craft kits for children with sustainability at heart. All her craft kits are beautifully thought out and really do bring the magic of creativity, colour and mindfulness to our young crafters. These wooden cross stitch flower key ring kits are a great introduction to cross stitch for the eco-conscious kid.

For the slightly older child looking to build on their cross stitch skill, Titch Stitch based in London create chunky cross stitch kits where the stitcher will get their first taste of full coverage stitching. They do however still only use full stitches and these kits have a robust plastic canvas making it easy for little hands to manage. This ladybird is my favourite!

Stitchfinity

Hands hold a yellow cross-stitch kit box from stitchfinity with a rainbow heart design. Background includes a desk with tape, scissors, and a notebook.

The girls at Stitchfinity were how I rediscovered cross stitch back in 2019. They were the first modern cross stitch designers I had come across and I just had to treat myself to one of their kits... then another... then another. So I'm so glad they do these beautiful children's kits for when little miss TSK is old enough. We've got a few years to wait though as these are suitable for 7+. All of Stitchfinity's chunky kits use binca, which is a cross stitch fabric much more like what we use as adults, so a great learning tool for when they have mastered the tougher materials of previous kits.

Buttonbag

Green Cross Stitch Kit box with button patterns, includes text "Everything you need to learn how to cross stitch" and "a buttonbag craft kit."

Is your littley starting to become a true cross stitch enthusiast? This Buttonbag Cross Stitch Kit includes all the materials and instructions to make no less than 9 cross stitch projects including bookmarks, a phone case, a christmas bauble and more, as well as including extras like little scissors. Not to mention the cute little green case is the perfect storage for your budding cross stitcher's growing cross stitch stash!
